Northwestern CTD Winter 2009 SEP CoursesGifted and Talented Saturday Enrichment Program
Northwestern Center for Talent Development opened enrollment for SEP courses on November 3. The Saturday Enrichment Program serves gifted pre-K through 9th graders.
The gifted program runs from Jan 10th through February 28th, 2009. Northwestern CTD holds SEP courses on campuses in Evanston, Gurnee, and Naperville, Illinois. All three locations offer morning classes; only Evanston holds afternoon classes. Northwestern CTD SEP- Gifted and Talented Program AdmissionsThe Saturday Enrichment Program serves prekindergarden through ninth graders. CTD SEP bases acceptance on qualifying subject area test scores from a nationally normed standardized achievement test. Apply online at the CTD SEP website. For example, a gifted student wanting to take a literature course only needs a qualifying score on the verbal portion of a qualifying exam. Northwestern CTD accepts scores from more than fifteen tests, including the SAT, ACT, and EXPLORE. CTD will also consider homeschool and portfolio applicants. SEP Program Courses- Curricular Focus and PhilosophyNorthwestern CTD SEP course design is research-based, focusing on hands-on experiential learning to help gifted children reach their fullest potentials. Saturday Enrichment Program- Evaluation and High School Course CreditSEP participants receive instructor feedback through a narrative report covering course performance with advice for further studies. The Winter 2009 SEP session culminates with a Student Expo on February 28th, where students proudly share their course accomplishments with parents and peers. Northwestern’s CTD Saturday Enrichment Program Some SEP courses qualify for high school credit. Winter 2009 SEP accredited honors courses include Integrated Science: Physics, Persuasion and Debate, Latin I, and Creative Writing: Poetry. Northwestern CTD Saturday Enrichment- Social and Academic BenefitsGifted and talented kids benefit from interaction with intellectual peers. Acceleration courses not only raise the academic bar through more demanding curricula, but also by providing a peer group where many gifted kids get their first experience not being the smartest in class. This encourages gifted kids to try harder and helps prevent gifted issues including a fixed mindset, imposter syndrome, gifted underachievement, and perfectionism. Many gifted kids also forge lasting friendships with kids “like them” who were met at SEP. Northwestern Center for Talent Development- SEP Tuition and Financial AidNorthwestern’s CTD SEP winter tuition fees are $350 per course. SEP students may enroll for both a morning and afternoon course on the Evanston campus. Application processing is $60 with an additional $25 late fee for applications received after December 27th. Students may enroll as late as the first week of classes, with an emergency processing fee of $75 for applications received after 5 PM on January 8th. Northwestern CTD SEP fully refunds application and tuition fees for admissions denial, course cancellation, or when all a gifted child’s selected courses are at full capacity. There is no refund for withdrawal after the first class date. Transfers to a different SEP course are allowed if requested before the second class meeting. Northwestern CTD grants need-based scholarships for SEP course tuition fees. Applications for financial aid require submission of parents’ most recent tax returns, a written statement of need, and completion of a SEP financial aid form. Northwestern CTD also encourages SEP students in financial aid to apply for the Jack Kent Cook Young Scholars Program. Northwestern CTD SEP Parent Seminars- Raising Gifted and Talented ChildrenWhile gifted kids participate in accelerated coursework, parents can attend lectures on gifted issues. The CTD SEP Parent Seminars meet during all SEP sessions. Car-pooling to SEP courses may be available.
